Ho incluso questo video in questa piccola collezione non per la bellezza artistica delle immagini, in effetti è una registrazione non molto buona della esibizione degli Sparks in un concerto, ma perché vado matto per la canzone che il video rappresenta e che si intitola "This town ain't big enough for the both of us", oppure in italiano "Questa città non è abbastanza grande per noi due". La canzone è stata prodotta nel 1974, 35 anni fa rispetto alla data di questo articolo (2009), e a quel epoca avevo 15 anni.
Quando l’ho sentita per la prima volta non ho capito niente: se cantava un maschio o un femmina, se la lingua in cui è stata cantata era giapponese o cinese. Ho preso la copertina del singolo che mi ha fatto sentire un mio amico e ho scoperto che la canta un maschio, che è cantata in inglese e che uno dei fratelli che sono i pilastri portanti del gruppo si assomiglia a Hitler, o almeno vuole farsi assomigliare con quei baffetti. Si chiama Ronald Mael, nel video suona le tastiere, e la sua apparenza sulla scena è molto fredda e distaccata, quasi assente. L’altro fratello più giovane si chiama Russell ed è il cantante.
La canzone mi è piaciuta tanto e mi piace ancora oggi. Un ritmo indiavolato, le note e gli accenti staccati, ricchezza dell’arrangiamento, la melodia che ad un certo punto cambia sulla base della musica country americana, c’è di tutto. E per quelli che vogliono conoscere anche il testo, a primo ascolto ritengo sia molto improbabile capire qualcosa, lo possono trovare in fondo e dico soltanto che è molto divertente: una canzone d’amore assolutamente non patetica.
